Background
Nandini Laxman Kudmate is a 12-year-old girl with cerebral palsy, which affects her motor coordination. In her family, there is a mother, father and two sisters. Nandni is the 2nd in her family. Their parents are labourers. Her village name is Bhamb in Ralegaon Block.
Her mother at the time of delivery, was hospitalized but seven days gone her mother was not delivered, then the doctor told her to go home. After seeing days, she was delivered, and Nandini was born. Her sister is 15th months older than Nandini & she is normal.
At the time of birth, she didn’t cry, her weight was 3 kg, and she opened her eyes after 12 days. Till the age of 8 Years there was no physical movement in Nandini. After 8 Years she tries to stand but always falls, but sits for some time.
Her school is near her home, so their parents took her to school for one to two hours and got her back because she can’t sit for long hour One year, this happens but she couldn’t read or write anything. So their parents let her stay at home.
Support
When the CBR project started, and her village was surveyed, she was identified, and from that year her Home Base started. Her parents were not responding at first, as they said that we had shown doctors and also given an oil massage to Nandini, but it has not affected her. For only two or three months, they massaged her and after that ignored her.
When Home Base started, at first, her target was physical movement. Later Some months passed on ADL activity and physical movement, both target was taken.
It was challenging for the CBR worker, but after one year, some changes occurred in her. She tried to stand for long hours and couldn’t fall by seeing this in her parents, some expectation occur, and they also helped to do the exercise what CBR worker told them.
Change
After two years lot of change has occurred in her, and now she can understand things. Third year physical movement, ADL activity and some education targets help her to improve.
By seeing improvement in her, their parents were happy. Now she can walk properly, she does the household work, and she also helps her mother with her work. Apart from all, she now writes her own name, alphabet, numbers know the colours, sizes, etc.
Nandini and her mother are members in Disable person Organization of her village and her father is a member in School Management Committee (SMC)
They were aware of Disability rights, schemes and facilities. Their DPO participate in the advocacy activities and also tries to avail the schemes and facilities from the panchayat.
Achievement
She was enrolled on school in 5th STD, 5 Km far from her village with the help of a CBR worker.
Now, with peer group support by Cycle, she goes to school.
Advocacy
Now DPO has also given a letter to their village Gram panchayat and asked them about 3% reservation funds, which are for disable person. Gram Sevak has given the letter for providing a cycle or an auto rickshaw fare from 3 % reservation for her so that she can go to school. An immediate response from Gram Sevak was received, and he said that they would do something for Nandini.
