Success Story – II

Background

Kanchan Raut, age 12 years, is Mental Retardation. She lives in Kalmner village of Ralegaon Block with her parents, her two sisters, and her grandparents. Kanchan and her sister are twins. One is normal. Kanchan got the disability as MR. 

When her mother was pregnant in months of seven, she got a fever and stomach pain. Her stomach pains occur regularly, for this she has taken medicine without Doctor Prescription, which affects her pregnancy. Delivery was normal. Kanchan’s sister’s development was normal, but her development occurred late. For 3 years, she has taken medicine   for Epilepsy from Dr. Kulkarni. 

Up to 5 years, no development was seen in Kanchan..  Speaking problem was also in her. Her family gave Allopathic treatment somehow she started to sit and stand.She tries to walk but falls suddenly. 

Support

CBR worker identified this girl earliest of CBR project started in Kalmner village. They were aware of her parents regarding Home Base. Her parents ignore what they told what you can do if our family become helpless? You are not GOD. Hearing all this CBR worker and two DPO members revisited, dialogues and counselling were regular for doing home-based. 

One day, her parents agreed to start a home base. When she was six years old, her Home Base started. When assessment was done, it was seen she was unable to perform her daily Living Activities,  Physical development, and there was no mental development, etc.  So the target was taken on physical and some ADL activities.  Mental development was also important for her. When a CBR worker does Home Base only her grand mother present with her.

Change

After three months of assessment, not much development was seen. Somehow, it was the same again after doing 3 months assessment physical movement seen on her like she stand and tries to walk for 10 -20 minutes she able to walk.  

Home base Assessment was regular and slowly, some changes occurred in her. After six to eight months, her mother gave a response to the CBR worker while doing Home base, and she also practised the activities that had been done by the CBR Worker   

The first time Kanchan was enrolled in school, her mother’s tears came out. She told me I never thought Kanchan would also go to school. Her  mother was very happy  

 Now today, not only does she walk, but she also does her ADL activities; dresses herself, and goes to school.  Sits in the classroom with her friends, she can speak clearly, from 1 to 50 she can speak numbers, some colours she can identify, wash her clothes, etc.

She has a disability certificate, an ID card, Pension is also getting.  

Achivements

She goes to school regularly.  The school also avail her mobility support. Like normal students, she can’t write, but with the support of TLM, she is learning. Teachers are also cooperative with her.  In school activities, she takes part. Her parents are members of DPO. They attend meetings. Her father is a member in School Management Committee. Her parents also take part in DPO activities, like in Blood Camp, he gave his time and Blood also for this camp. 

Peer group support. Mother Group has also formed for Kanchan, and they help in Home Base. 

Now she is in Std fourth class.
